Wow! That is an awesome story. I love traveling and actually spent a year working at a school in China. (I understand the temptation of those keys) I haven't been to Scandinavia (yet!) but my grandparents were both from Norway and I really would love to travel there some day.
The music you described also sounds really cool. I have some music by bands like Tempest that take traditional Celtic music and add electric guitars and such or write their own modern Celtic music. I also have a lot of 'filk' music ~folk style music dealing with fantasy/sci-fi/humor/modern issues.
Is there somewhere (that is not Helsinki) where I could listen to the music you described? I would love to hear it!
Tempest's sound is not too far off from Nordic bands like Hedningarna and Garmarna; Tempest's Lief Sørbye did a solo album of Nordic trad music called Springdans.
Northside is an American label that releases some of this music here; I added their website to the class del.icio.us account and it has lots of info about the music and their line of albums. All of Northside's music is on iTunes, so you can listen to clips there. Have fun! :)
Heather, just FYI, the version of Springdans I have is on Musical Heritage Society's label, and I believe Sørbye originally released it himself as well. It has a tune called "Haugebonden" which is the root for a Tempest tune called "The Barrow Man". But you won't find these on Northside. (now you know why one of my friends calls me "Obscure Music Librarian!")
Jenna, that hadn't even occurred to me. I was caught up in a romantic expatriate fantasy of dealing music by day and frequenting cafes by night. Very tempting! But if I had taken the keys, I would've missed out on many great experiences from the birding tour. C'est la vie.

Ohhh, I did not know that about Leif Sorbye, I'll have to look for that. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the website.
I wouldn't have taken the keys! It would have been my luck that the store burnt down under my watch. Sounded like an interesting adventure though!
